Recent polls conducted by major American media outlets indicate that confidence in President Donald Trump’s administration is waning even among members of his own Republican Party.
Surveys carried out by organizations such as the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, New York Times/Siena College, and Fox News show that the President is receiving low marks on key issues like the economy and immigration. Some respondents believe he is overreaching his authority and focusing on the wrong matters.
According to findings released this week, many Americans have described Trump’s second term so far as “scary.”
One of the surveys revealed that only 24% of Americans think Trump has prioritized the right issues during his presidency.
More than half of those polled disapprove of Trump’s overall performance, with a significant number opposing his policies on tariffs and the reduction of federal jobs.
These poll results arrive just as Trump approaches the 100-day milestone of his second term.
The responses suggest that many Americans are already feeling disillusioned by some of his policies, including reciprocal tariffs and strict deportation measures.
A poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center found that even within the Republican base, support for Trump’s focus is not overwhelming. Only 54% of Republicans surveyed believe he is addressing the right priorities. Among independent voters, that number drops sharply just 9% believe his focus is correct, while 42% say he is concentrating on the wrong areas.
Overall, about 39% of respondents approve of how Trump is managing his presidency. Only around 40% support his approach to foreign relations, trade negotiations, and economic matters.
Another poll, conducted by New York Times/Siena College, reported that Trump’s overall approval rating stands at 42%, dropping to just 29% among independent voters.
More than half of participants said they believe Trump is “exceeding the powers available to him,” and 59% described his second term as “scary.”
That same Times poll revealed a sharp decline in approval of Trump’s handling of the economy only 43% support it now, compared to 64% during his first term, as recorded in an April 2024 survey.
Half of the voters surveyed disapproved of his trade strategy with other nations, and 61% believe that the authority to impose tariffs should require congressional consent.
The Times also reported that 63% of respondents including 40% of Republicans opposed allowing a President to deport legal immigrants who have participated in protests against Israel.
On immigration, a Washington Post-ABC-Ipsos poll found that 53% of Americans disapprove of how Trump is handling the issue, while 46% expressed approval.
According to that poll, opposition to Trump’s immigration approach now includes 90% of Democrats, 56% of independents, and 11% of Republicans.
An Associated Press poll published Thursday showed that about half of U.S. adults believe Trump’s trade policies will cause prices to rise significantly, and an additional 30% think prices could increase somewhat. Around half of the population is also “extremely” or “very” concerned about the potential for a U.S. recession in the coming months.
Meanwhile, a Fox News poll released Wednesday indicated that only 38% of Americans approve of Trump’s economic performance, with 56% expressing disapproval.
That same poll found 58% of respondents disapprove of his overall job as President, and 59% disapprove of his handling of inflation.
Among Generation Z those born between 1995 and 2012 an NBC Stay Tuned survey revealed that 69% disapprove of Trump’s approach to economic issues and the rising cost of living.
Gen Z respondents voiced concern over their ability to afford rent, let alone home ownership, and expressed anxiety about inflation.
A majority of Gen Z respondents also rejected rigid traditional gender norms, and more than 90% said foreign students holding visas or green cards should be entitled to the same due process rights as American citizens.
