Lagos State has taken a significant step towards improving healthcare services for adolescents and young people. No fewer than 160 healthcare service providers have begun training to offer better services to this demographic, aiming to reduce stigma and improve access to healthcare in public hospitals.
The two-day training, organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Health in partnership with the Saving One Million Lives Programme for Results (SOMLPforR), focuses on providing inclusive and confidential care for young people. According to Dr. Mazeedat Erinosho, Program Manager of SOMLPforR, “Adolescence is a delicate period that requires careful attention… every healthcare provider must be ready to support them.”
The training covers key areas such as nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, and effective communication to help healthcare workers build trust with young patients. Dr. Folasade Oludara, Director of Family Health and Nutrition at the Lagos State Ministry of Health, emphasised that “youths and adolescents should feel safe and welcomed when they visit a hospital… This training will help ensure that young people have a positive experience in our health facilities.”
Participants praised the training, saying it gave them a better understanding of adolescent health needs. Okunmuyide Oluwakemi, a medical social welfare officer, noted that “this training has been an eye-opener… I plan to share what I’ve learnt with my colleagues so we can work better with the medical team.
The training is part of the state’s efforts to strengthen its healthcare system and improve the quality of care provided to adolescents and young people. Dr. Nasir Ariyibi, Director of Health Services at Lagos State University (LASU), praised the initiative, saying, “Most of our patients are young people aged 15 to 25 who need specialised care. This training will help us create a more welcoming environment for them, ensuring they get the support they need during this important stage of life.”
The Lagos State Government has demonstrated its commitment to improving healthcare services for young people, and this training is a significant step in that direction. By equipping healthcare providers with the skills and knowledge needed to provide inclusive and confidential care, the state is helping to ensure that young people receive the support they need to thrive.
As Dr. Erinosho noted, “Healthcare providers have a critical role to play in supporting the health and well-being of adolescents and young people. By providing them with the training and resources they need, we can help ensure that young people receive the care and support they deserve.”
The training is expected to have a positive impact on the healthcare system in Lagos State, and participants are eager to put their new skills into practice. As Okunmuyide Oluwakemi said, “I’m excited to share what I’ve learnt with my colleagues and start providing better care to our young patients.”
Lagos State’s commitment to providing a safe and inclusive healthcare system for young people is evident in this initiative. By making healthcare services more youth-friendly, the state aims to improve access to essential medical care, encourage healthy habits, and ensure that young people receive the support they need as they grow into adulthood.
With this training, Lagos State is taking a significant step towards improving the health and well-being of its young people. By providing healthcare providers with the skills and knowledge they need, the state is helping to ensure that young people receive the care and support they deserve.
