Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), revealed that he briefly considered stepping down after a significant technical error disrupted the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Oloyede made this statement during a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday with external examiners, civil society organizations, and stakeholders in the tertiary education sector.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the exam and the calls for his resignation, the JAMB Registrar shared that some critics had raised allegations of ethnic bias and sabotage in connection with the mishap.

“When it happened, my first reaction was to resign. But people advised me that the students will never forgive me because it will look like you abandoned them at such a time,” Oloyede said.

Reports indicate that the results for the 2025 UTME, released on May 9, showed that more than 78% of candidates scored below 200 out of a possible 400 points.

In response to the public outcry, JAMB launched an internal review and identified a major technical issue that had affected the integrity of the results.

Oloyede further clarified that, on May 14, he disclosed that the results for 379,997 candidates from 157 centres in Lagos and the southeastern region were impacted by the error. He attributed the problem to a faulty server update from one of JAMB’s technical service providers, which led to candidates’ responses not being uploaded during the first three days of the exam. This went unnoticed until after the results were released.

To address the situation, JAMB organized a resit for the affected candidates, which began on May 16 and continued until May 19.
