The reinstated chairman of Irewole local government, Remi Abass, was allegedly murdered. The Osun West Majiyagbe Ambassadors, or TOWMA, are a sociopolitical group that has called for justice in this case.
The group claimed that Abass’s murder was an attempt to end the call for the Osun West Senatorial District to be included in the 2026 All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket.
According to ZINGTIE, Remi Abass was slain in the violence that erupted between supporters of the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the Court of Appeal’s ruling on February 10, 2025.
In the run-up to the state’s local government election on February 22, 2025, the ruling turned into a divisive topic between the two rival political parties.
Speaking to members following a nonviolent demonstration in Iwo on Wednesday, TOWMA’s acting coordinator, Afeez Olalekan Ismail, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to pursuing justice and political equity in spite of efforts to quell its agitation.
The group also reaffirmed their request that the APC give Osun West the 2026 governorship ticket, characterizing Abass’s murder as a plot to undermine the West’s ambition.
The group vowed that his struggle for equity must not be in vain, saying, “They want to destabilise us through the death of Honourable Abass and do not want the ticket to come from us, but we will not relent.”
“His life was dedicated to advocating for fairness, and in honour of his legacy, we urge APC stakeholders not to let his death be in vain. His unwavering commitment must inspire meaningful action by ensuring that the APC candidate emerges from Osun West.”
In the spirit of equality and justice, he encouraged President Bola Tinubu, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, other state party leaders, and other important stakeholders to take their demands into consideration.
“Despite our district’s sincere commitment and unwavering loyalty to the progressives, the marginalisation of Osun West is an undeniable fact. We urge our leaders to confront it with urgency and resolve,” the statement read.
In addition to correcting historical injustice, he maintained that zoning Osun West for the 2026 governorship ticket would increase the party’s chances of regaining Osun from the PDP.
“Our members believe the political landscape in Osun State is ripe for transformation, and an APC candidate from Osun West offers the brightest chance of winning the gubernatorial election,” the group stated.
The group attesting to the district’s allegiance highlighted that, in the 2022 gubernatorial election, Osun West gave the APC six of its ten local government areas, even though the party’s nominee was from Osun Central.
“We appeal to the conscience of every APC leader to acknowledge this moment as pivotal, not just for Osun West but for the party itself. This dream can become a reality with your support.”
