The African Democratic Congress (ADC) claims that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demonstrated their lack of concern for alleviating the suffering of Nigerians by starting discussions about zoning their 2027 presidential tickets two years prior to the election.
This was stated by Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s national publicity secretary, during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday.
“The general election is still in 2027; it’s still two years away. Why are we so preoccupied and behaving in such a way that Nigerians begin to look at the political elite across the political divides that we don’t care about,” he queried.
Recall that the PDP kept its chairmanship in the north and allocated the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the southern half of Nigeria during its National Executive Council, or NEC, meeting in Abuja on Monday.
22 governors from the ruling APC and a few influential party units earlier in May adopted President Bola Tinubu, who is a southerner, as the sole candidate of the party for the 2027 election.
Both the APC and the PDP claimed that their choices were in line with the unspoken eight-year rule that the country’s northern and southern regions alternate power.
However, the ADC alliance, which included former minister Rotimi Amaechi, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, and former Labour Party flag bearer Peter Obi, criticized the APC’s and, more recently, the PDP’s choice.
The PDP was playing a game, according to ADC spokesman Abdullahi. “Why are they taking the decision two years before the general election?
“They are very experienced people, and they know the implications of showing their way too early. So, it’s either they are playing the predetermined game or batting some people to come around because they’ve been shopping around for who will be the presidential candidate of the party.”
