Akinwunmi Adesina, the president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has refuted allegations linking him to the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria.

According to reports, Adesina made a suggestion that he might run for president in 2027 after a recent interview.

The AfDB president, however, has refuted the rumors, claiming that he never expressed a desire to run for president.

Adesina clarified that the interview was misunderstood and misconstrued in multiple Nigerian media sources in a post on his X Twitter.

“A segment of my recent interview on @ARISEtv has been both misinterpreted and misrepresented in several Nigerian media outlets. What I said was, ‘I will be available to serve in any capacity, globally, in Africa, anywhere, including my own country.’”

“A listen to the substantive and robust interview, which is available online, will show this to be the case. For clarity and for the record, I did not say that I am running for the office of President of Nigeria,” Adesina said.

Adesina, whose term as AfDB president ends in May 2025, had previously disassociated himself from Nigeria’s presidential campaign, according to ZINGTIE.

Adesina, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture under President Goodluck Jonathan and was first elected as AfDB president in 2015 before being reelected in 2020, issued a statement excluding himself from the presidential race amid rumors leading up to the 2027 elections.
