Dominic Alancha, a public affairs expert and head of the Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum (NENF), has asked the All Progressives Congress (APC) and head Bola Ahmed Tinubu to abandon the plan to run a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in the 2027 elections.
At a time when the nation’s unity is being put to the test by poverty, insecurity, and sectarian bloodshed, Alancha said in a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday that Nigeria cannot afford leadership that “deepens our divides.”
He cautioned that running a Muslim-Muslim ticket might jeopardize national cohesion and reduce the party’s chances of winning elections.
The consequences of the 2023 elections, when President Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket “ignited unprecedented religious tensions, alienated millions of Christians, and fueled fears of exclusion,” Alancha contended, must be learned by the ruling party.
“Over 80 percent of Northern Christians rejected the APC in 2023.
“That rejection cost the party states like Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, and even the FCT. Many of our Christian allies within the APC defected, warning of catastrophic consequences for Nigeria’s fragile unity.”
Recall that President Bola and his vice president, Kashim Shettima, won the 2023 presidential election by running on a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
