The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) chairman has been accused of being bias by former Transportation Minister Chibuike Amaechi.
He claims that Mahmood Yakubu is not like the former head of INEC, Attahiru Jega, who he characterizes as a true democrat.
Speaking on Arise News Tuesday night, Amaechi asserted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would not have defeated an incumbent president in 2015 if Yakubu had served as INEC Chairman.
Jega oversaw the general election in 2015 that resulted in the APC’s victory and the fall of the Goodluck Jonathan-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government in Aso Rock.
In 2019 and 2023, Yakubu was in control, but the APC continued to hold sway nationally.
Though it seems the former minister has misgivings about the electoral umpire, Amaechi is one of the leading leaders who are banding together to create a coalition in the hopes of overthrowing the Tinubu administration.
“The current chairman of INEC, if he was the chairman of INEC in 2015, we would not have won. May God bless Jega. The current chairman of INEC can only be compared to Iwu,” he said.
“When we were to register APC, Jega opened the door and we complied with the registration requirements. He got APC registered. The current man, if you comply with all these, he would not register you. Already, INEC is biased.”
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are among the other prominent politicians leading the discussions for a coalition.
