Reports that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, intends to compete for governor of Abia State in 2027 have been characterised as unfounded by Mr Emma Trumps Eke, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abia State.

Eke, the National Population Commission’s Federal Commissioner for Abia State, described the allegations making the rounds on what he described as a little-known site as “baseless and politically motivated.”

He accused an unidentified Igbere “invisible politician” of masterminding the rumours to further his younger brother’s campaign for the Bende Federal Constituency seat in a statement he provided to reporters on Friday.

The Deputy Speaker’s ally Eke explained that, at this point in time, Kalu was more concerned with fortifying the APC and striving to produce outcomes for the party and the President than he was with pursuing personal political goals.

“The political future of the Deputy Speaker will be determined by God and his political family.

“Whether he will run for Senate, governorship or return to the House of Representatives will be decided openly,” he stated.

He added that, “As the leader of the opposition in Abia, he should not rest but work hard to redeem the state.

“APC is daily harvesting great men of character and resources with the aim of winning the state for the party.”

He denounced “divisive rumours as distractions from the party’s goal of strengthening its position in the state ahead of the next elections” and urged unity among the APC in Abia.
