Mr. Dumebi Kachikwu, the African Democratic Congress’s (ADC) presidential candidate for 2023, claims that if elected president of Nigeria in 2027, he will change several of Tinubu’s policies, such as eliminating gasoline subsidies.
Poor Nigerians shouldn’t have to bear the “price of our inefficiencies or our inability to manage a subsidy system,” according to Kachikwu, who claimed in an interview with Vanguard that subsidies in and of themselves aren’t a bad policy.
He asserts that just a small number of Nigerians have misused the subsidy program, emphasizing that the proper course of action is to target the corrupt individuals, “prosecute them to the full extent of the law, and bring sanity into the system,” rather than shutting it down.
“That’s what we ought to have done. But when I say this, I want to juxtapose this against the situation President Tinubu met on the ground.
“He didn’t remove the fuel subsidy. We must be careful about saying that the President removed fuel subsidies on the day of inauguration”.
He maintained that the fuel subsidy was eliminated by the previous administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, pointing out that Buhari’s administration “didn’t provide for it in the budget. And President Tinubu came in, saw that there was no provision for fuel subsidy and merely made the announcement.
“A lot of people rightfully or wrongfully believe that he was the one that removed subsidies. No, President Buhari didn’t provide the subsidy”.
