Political parties in the South West have been urged by the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, to nominate Muslim candidates for governor in 2027.
In a statement released on Monday, the group’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, made the call.
Akintola pointed out that throughout the last six years, Christians had controlled all six of the region’s states, resulting in what it called a “religious imbalance.”
“Meanwhile, there has been religious imbalance in the administration of all the South Western states in the past six years as all of them brandish Christian governors to date.
“This has resulted in a wide disconnect between the state governments and the Muslim populace,” Akintola said.
He went on to say that Muslims have been shut out “at both executive and administrative levels of governance,” which he claimed weakens democracy by preventing people from participating and being included.
“We therefore advise political parties in the region to pick Muslims as their gubernatorial candidates. This will serve as a guarantee to secure Muslim votes in their gubernatorial elections,” he said.
