The Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, has expressed its willingness to provide Abia State Governor Alex Otti the party’s governorship ticket for the 2027 election if he chooses to defect.

Senator Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), said this while discussing the Abia governor’s political future and the party’s strategy for the upcoming general elections.

Wabara said the PDP will gladly accept Otti and back him for a second term, characterizing the governor as a formidable political actor whose performance has gained recognition across party lines.

“If he makes up his mind to join the Big Umbrella, the party will not hesitate to give him the governorship ticket in 2027,” Wabara said.

He spoke on Sunday in Umuahia at the launch of the Abia State Government’s 25-Year Development Plan, which drew political leaders, stakeholders, and development partners.

Wabara stated that Otti’s performance in government has made him appealing to different political parties, emphasizing that competent leadership and demonstrable results now take precedence over party affiliation.

He stated that the governor’s increased popularity across party platforms demonstrates the successes achieved during his term.

The former Senate President further stated that the PDP is currently engaged in a repositioning process aimed at repairing confidence and strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

He explained that the party’s national leadership is working to restructure and present a more credible and appealing platform for candidates.

Wabara said that the South-East remains a PDP stronghold, and Otti’s potential defection will considerably increase the party’s power in the region.

According to him, the PDP is committed to attracting progressive, performance-oriented leaders who can revive the party’s prominence in Abia State and across the country.

Wabara praised the Abia 25-Year Development Plan, calling it a strategic blueprint capable of transforming the state if properly implemented.

He applauded the governor’s accomplishments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, industrial development, and security.

He also praised the implementation of electric buses for urban transportation, stating that the measure will alleviate suffering and improve mobility for inhabitants.

“As an elder statesman and stakeholder in Abia politics, I have a moral obligation to acknowledge performance, irrespective of party affiliation,” he said.

He noted that many Abians are returning to the state to observe the changes, emphasizing the need of good administration across party lines.

According to him, Otti has returned Abia State to the progressive path envisioned by its founders, and joining the PDP will boost the governor’s electoral prospects in 2027.

The chairman of the BoT recalls praising Otti during the restoration of Aba’s Port Harcourt Road, which drew criticism at the time.

“When I hailed the governor for rehabilitating the long-abandoned Port Harcourt Road, which is a federal road, some people called for my head,” he said.

“Today, I have been vindicated. Abians across political divides are celebrating the evidence of good governance in the state.”

Wabara also asked the governor to seriously consider the PDP, noting leadership issues in the Labour Party.

He said that the PDP has a stronger national structure and a broader reach, which will be critical in overcoming pressure from the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.

“In 2027, the governor will require a platform with national spread and the capacity to resist intimidation, and the PDP provides that,” the politician stated.
