The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has revealed that a total of 23,659 individuals are currently unaccounted for across Nigeria.

This announcement was made in Yola on Saturday, with the ICRC noting that the figure remains high despite ongoing efforts to reunite separated individuals with their families separations often caused by armed conflicts and violence.

Mr. Benson Lee, the ICRC’s Protection of Family Link Officer, shared the update during a statement marking this year’s International Day of the Disappeared.

He pointed out that Borno State, which has borne the brunt of insurgency in recent years, accounts for a significant portion of the missing persons 67 percent of the total cases nationwide.

Lee also highlighted that 59 percent of those missing were children at the time they disappeared.

While emphasizing the organization’s continued efforts in tracing and reuniting missing persons with their families, he called on all parties involved in conflicts to take every necessary step to prevent further disappearances.

The ICRC official, appealing for empathy for families of missing people, said, “Families of missing persons need to feel that they are not alone and their loved ones are not forgotten.”
