After expressing her intense anguish and annoyance at not being married when the majority of her age group is getting married, a heartbreaking video of a 31-year-old Nigerian woman sobbing hysterically went viral.
“All my mates are getting married,” the young woman said in the tearful video, tears streaming down her nose. The video, which has since sparked important online discussions, showed the unadulterated suffering that many women endure in private.
Tears were streaming down her face. Her eyes widened. Her voice shook with powerlessness. She sat in low light, wearing a plain Ankara top, and clutched her head in one hand as if to prevent it from exploding with ideas.
Her voice was filled with agony, but it was more than simply being single; it was also about feeling abandoned in a world that seemed to have forgotten her. Unfortunately, many women live this reality, lying awake at night wondering what went wrong.
In a society where people are always comparing who got married, who gave birth, who purchased land, and who is still “wasting time,” marriage is more than simply a fantasy for some women; it is a gauge of their value. However, no one is aware of the wounds in their hearts.
When they are alone, no one hears the cry. No one pays attention to how every wedding invitation stings more than a knife, how church services feel like judgmental places, and how birthdays get worse.
Others criticized society for making women feel inadequate simply because they are not married, while others offered words of support, advising her not to give up. Some even called her desperate and made fun of her.
They fail to see, however, that beneath that frantic expression lies a weary soul who has tried, prayed, waited, believed, and yet found herself crying in front of a camera without a ring on her finger instead.
Many Nigerians, particularly women, are now taking advantage of this opportunity to express their personal annoyances. According to one Facebook user, “This is me every night. Nobody knows the pressure I face in my family. They don’t even ask how I am doing, they only ask when I will marry.” Another lady wrote, “I’m 35 and single. I’ve buried my tears too long. This video opened my wound again.”
This is not merely a video that went viral. This is the face of countless women who have had their friends make fun of them, suitors ignore them, and those they previously assisted forget them. Furthermore, it is about loneliness, comparison, unfulfilled promises, and pressure from the church and family.
It is not only about marriage. Some people have had enough of being powerful. Some are sick of grinning despite their discomfort. Some people are sick of hearing “your own will come.”
I saw more than simply a woman crying when I rewatched the video. I observed a generation that has been socialized to use deadlines to determine their worth. I witnessed a soul pleading with God over her invisibility. Words cannot adequately express the suffering I witnessed.
The hurt of feeling as though time has snatched away something worthwhile. Tears are not a sign of weakness. They are an appeal for solace in a world that seldom provides it.
Perhaps, just possibly, someone needs to know they’re not alone. that their suffering is real. There is yet hope for that recovery. That marriage will occur when the moment is right, not when society expects it to. Furthermore, their life is still lovely, worthwhile, and deserving of love despite the delays.
How do you feel about the video that this woman made? Have you ever sobbed in private over a postponed marriage or familial pressure? Tell us what you think. Make your voice known.
