Roughly 350 Israeli writers signed a statement on Tuesday urging an immediate halt to the destructive conflict in Gaza.
As reported by the Times of Israel, prominent literary figures such as David Grossman, Joshua Sobol, and Zeruya Shalev were among those who endorsed the appeal.
“This war endangers the lives of IDF soldiers, of the hostages, and causes horrific suffering for helpless civilians in Gaza.
“The acts being committed in Gaza and the occupied territories are not done in our name, but they will be on our account,’’ the letter said.
The authors demanded a swift cessation of Israel’s military campaign targeting the Hamas organization in Gaza.
They also called for the safe return of all hostages currently held in the Gaza Strip and the establishment of a globally backed resolution concerning the region’s future governance.
In the letter, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was accused of prolonging the conflict for self-serving motives.
Similar appeals have emerged from within Israel’s military community, urging negotiations with Hamas for the release of captives and a stop to the war.
The current conflict erupted following the October 7, 2023, incursion into Israel by Hamas and other militant factions.
That assault led to the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the capture of over 250 hostages, who were taken into Gaza.
Since that time, the health authorities in Gaza have reported a death toll nearing 51,000, including a significant number of women and children.
These figures, which do not specify how many were combatants, have not been independently confirmed.
The Israeli military has claimed that around 20,000 militants have been killed in the ongoing operations.
