5 journalists among 29 killed across Gaza in 24 hours

Over the course of the last day, Israeli forces have intensified their military operations throughout Gaza, killing at least 29 Palestinians—five of them journalists.

With the five journalists who have passed away, the total number of journalists killed by the Hamas-Israeli conflict since October 7, 2023, is now 158.

Health officials in the Gaza territory said on Saturday that about one hundred individuals were injured in the two separate attacks that resulted in the deaths of 29 Palestinians on Friday and Saturday.

In one specific incident, officials said that on Saturday, an airstrike on a Palestinian police car resulted in the deaths of four police officers and the injuries of eight more, as Israeli forces continued their incursions into Rafah, close to the Egyptian border.

According to a statement from the interior ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, among the four police officers who died was Fares Abdel-Al, the commander of the police unit in Tel Al-Sultan’s western Rafah area.

According to the Israeli military, its forces killed multiple Palestinian gunmen, demolished multiple underground buildings, and continued intelligence-base operations in Rafah.

The military clarified that the goal of its actions in Rafah was to destroy the final Hamas armed wing units.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that differences still exist between the negotiating parties following the departure of Israel’s Mossad chief from Doha at the conclusion of Gaza truce talks with mediators, despite Hamas having initially approved a truce deal in Gaza and dropping the demand that Israel commit to a full end to the war, according to the ZINGTIE.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel and Palestinian militant groups led by Hamas have been engaged in an armed battle that primarily occurs in the Gaza Strip.

Clashes have also occurred with Hezbollah at the borders with Syria and Lebanon, as well as in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The Hamas-Israel battle is considered to be a component of the larger Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the 1973 Yom Kippur battle, and it has been officially recognised as the fifth war between Gaza and Israel since 2008.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas is said to have started on October 7, when about 3,000 militants broke through the Gaza-Israel border and targeted Israeli military installations and residential areas while simultaneously firing thousands of missiles into Israel.

The militants are said to have killed 1,139 Israelis and foreign people during the surprise attack. They are also said to have kidnapped 251 Israelis and foreign nationals and taken them into Gaza.

At the time, Hamas claimed, among other things, that its strike was in retaliation for Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestinian territory, blockades of the Gaza Strip, and growth of illegal Israeli settlements.

In response, Israel began devastating bombing attacks and on October 27, it launched a massive ground invasion with the intention of destroying Hamas and freeing all hostages.

The organisation Hamas, whose official name is Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya, is a political and military Palestinian Sunni Islamist movement that controls portions of the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip since 2007.
