Rita, 62, and Theodore Smith Sr., 64, have been wed for 42 years. Theodore would regularly stop by her parents’ house when they were teenagers, and one day he asked for her phone number. That’s how the two met. Shortly after, they were married; he was 21 and she was 19.

According to Rita, their marriage has always been solid, but as their three children have grown up and become empty nesters, it has gotten even better.

She told Business Insider , “You get to communicate a lot and get to know each other even more. You get a lot of intimacy in.”

Recently, Rita’s TikToks went viral with her vibrant techniques for keeping marriages alive. One of the things that keeps her marriage exciting, according to the proud wife, is how her husband surprises her with spontaneous date nights.

“He is so romantic, and he’s so spontaneous. I have to keep up with him,” she remarked.

Occasionally, Theodore would call Smith to check on her availability and instruct her to prepare for a hotel stay. In addition to going on impromptu dates, the couple tries to keep up a physical bond via holding hands when strolling around town or viewing Christmas lights.

Theodore makes sure the Smiths stay in touch with one another by calling his wife every day, often within fifteen minutes of leaving the house. Rita claims that these actions give her the impression that she is a true queen.

The Smiths deliberately crafted the marriage they wanted, even though neither of them had someone who served as an example of this kind of relationship for them.

“I wanted a different marriage,” Rita expressed. “I knew what I wanted, and I knew what type of man I wanted, and when I got blessed with that, I have such a gratitude for that.”

When Rita first got married, she said she was “so broken” since her mother had abused her when she was a child. She described how her devoted husband helped her get through her challenging history and even prayed for her when she got irritable and challenging to deal with.

To this day, she said they “do a lot of laughing, intimacy time with each other, getting to know each other, encouraging each other, building each other up.”

“I’ve had this type of love for 42 blissful years, since day one,” she said. “And he never changed. His love for me is consistent.”
