The Lagos State Government has marked the 2025 International Widows Day by empowering 700 widows with N50,000 each. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, emphasized the state’s commitment to inclusive governance, particularly for widows, who are often the pillars of many households.
“This is not just a commemoration; it is a solemn call to action. Widowhood should not be a sentence to hardship, but a new chapter of courage, support, and renewed purpose,” Dada said.
The cash support is part of a broader package that includes vocational training through the Livelihood Economic Empowerment Programme. The programme provides training in various trades, such as fashion design, soap making, and catering, as well as start-up kits and links to micro-enterprise support initiatives.
“These programmes are intentionally structured to be time-efficient and practical, recognising that widows often carry the dual burden of being caregivers and breadwinners,” Dada added.
The commissioner also highlighted the emotional and legal challenges faced by widows, noting that the Ministry offers psychosocial counselling and legal advisory services. “You are seen. You are valued. You are supported,” Dada assured the widows.
The empowerment programme aims to restore self-worth, economic independence, and community prosperity among widows in Lagos State
