Mr. Effiok Okon, the deputy community leader of Ekot Etonko in Calabar South LGA of Cross River State, has urged the government to routinely step in and provide free sanitary pad donations for their young women, particularly female students.

He spoke at the distribution of free sanitary pads to women and schoolgirls in the Ekot Etonko neighborhood by PadBank, a non-governmental organization working to end period poverty and promote menstrual hygiene.

He called the gesture “a blessing to mothers and daughters alike” and praised the organization for it.

Given that their girl children frequently miss school during their periods, the community leader urged more interventions of this kind to be implemented in the area.

As part of PadBank’s Mobile Outreach 3.0 campaign, which seeks to reach 12 towns throughout the state before the end of the year, sanitary pads were distributed for free yesterday.

Speaking at the event, PadBank Coordinator Madam Archibong Bassey stated that the program aims to promote school attendance and restore dignity for girls who frequently skip lessons because they lack sanitary supplies.

“When a girl misses school every month because she lacks sanitary pads, it’s not just her future that’s affected, it’s the future of the community,” Bassey said. “Menstrual hygiene is a right, not a privilege.”

She said that volunteers and private contributors who are dedicated to promoting women’s empowerment and health keep them running.

Speaking as well, Victoria Omini, the Face of PadBank, stated that the outreach was motivated by empathy and a need to support young girls in leading self-assured lives during their periods.

“No girl should feel ashamed or drop out of school because of menstruation,” she said. “What we do is not just charity. it’s empowerment.”

Following participatory workshops on reproductive health and menstrual hygiene, women and schoolgirls received complimentary sanitary pads.
