A ransom of N7 million has been requested by the kidnappers of Omoniyi Eleyinmi, a staff member of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko, AAUA, Ondo State, five days after the victim was abducted.

Five days ago, Eleyinmi, a staff member at the school’s Faculty of Education, was kidnapped as he was making his way home from work to his home in Supare-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Council Area of the state.

Prior to his arrival, the gunmen had broken into his home, and he was apprehended as he got off the commercial motorcycle he was riding from Akungba, amid intermittent gunfire.

A family source claims that the kidnappers, who contacted Eleyinmi’s family on Thursday to demand the ransom, had on Wednesday given the victim’s wife permission to talk with him briefly in order to obtain proof of life.

According to the source, following a series of entreaties and discussions, the kidnappers lowered their initial ransom demand of N100 million to N7 million.

Following the incident, the AAUA Alumni Association, from which Eleyinmi also received his degree, has appealed to Nigerians to donate in order to raise the money needed to ensure his release.

According to a statement released by the association’s Global Publicity Secretary, O’Seun Ogunsakin, prompt donations will significantly contribute to Eleyinmi’s healthy reunion with his family.

The statement reads in parts, “Distinguished Alumni, I am sure that majority of you must have heard the news of the kidnap of one of us, Niyi Eleyinmi who is the Faculty Officer of the Faculty of Education, AAUA.“

Eleyinmi was kidnapped on Monday and the kidnappers had demanded the sum of Seven million Naira (#7,000,000). It is on this note that I want to passionately appeal to you to donate towards securing the safe release of Niyi from his captors.“

We have just 24 hours to raise the aforementioned sum. Kindly make your donation into the account below:
Polaris Bank 1011167606 Akinwande Joyce Morenikeji. May God help us as we make the donation.“

When reached, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, revealed that tactical commanders have been instructed by Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal to make sure the victims are retrieved without suffering any injuries.

While distancing the police from ransom negotiation, Ayanlade stated that “The Commissioner of Police has directed all tactical commanders to swiftly act and ensure that the victim is rescued. He also directed that all suspects connected with the crime are apprehended.“
