In a move aimed at preventing potential disaster and loss of life, the Ebem Ohafia community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State has placed a total ban on the sale of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, within the Ebem market.
The decision was announced in a communique released by the Ebem Ujurueze Palace, Ekeleugo Ebem, following an emergency session of the Council of Chiefs and Elders. The statement emphasized that the prohibition takes immediate effect.
The document was endorsed by several key figures, including the traditional ruler of the ancient Ebem Ohafia kingdom, Ezie Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, along with Emeka Mba, President-General of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), Idika Kalu Uche, and Ifeanyi Okali, among others.
Community authorities also declared a firm stance against cult activities, gang violence, and substance abuse, stating that such behaviors have been completely outlawed within Ebem.
They called on parents and guardians to take responsibility for their children’s behavior and warned landlords to evict any tenants involved in these unlawful activities or face consequences themselves.
“Anyone found in unlawful possession of arms will be handed over to law enforcement agencies”, the Chiefs and Elders ruled.
Additionally, the leadership issued a two-week ultimatum to all scrap metal dealers operating in the area to vacate the community or face serious sanctions.
The crackdown comes in response to increasing reports of theft, vandalism, and break-ins, which security sources have linked to the operations of scrap collectors and their networks.
