The Abia Soccer Fest organizing committee, or ASF, has declared that it has identified fifty young players from within the state from the recently concluded Phase One of the state’s grassroots football competition.

Uzor Nwachukwu, the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, stated during a news conference in Umuahia that his Ministry and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development were in charge of the joint endeavor.

According to him, the First Phase encompassed all 771 autonomous communities in the State’s 17 LGAs and produced champions from the various wards. As a result, 166 matches were played throughout the State, with victors receiving awards.

Speaking as well, Local Organizing Committee Chairman John Udeagbala, represented by Vice Chairman Captain Eric Asomugha, stated that the grassroots competition had already identified over 50 young football stars from a pool of 3,000 players throughout the State, and that additional discoveries were anticipated during the State Finals’ Second Phase.

He added that the talents found are potential Super Eagles stars and that the state government is working with respectable football scouting organizations and Nigerian football league clubs to make sure they are developed and directed toward professional careers.

According to Udeagbala, the State Finals, phase two, will start in late January or early February of 2026.

The 17 LGA champions will battle in four zones—Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia, and Arochukwu—and there will be a grand finale at Umuahia Township Stadium.
