The Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, chapter in Abia State has accused the state administration of trying to stifle the party’s and other opposition groups’ voices.

The party was responding to the Abia State government’s concern on a recent political gathering that took place at former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s residence in Obingwa LGA.

The Abia PDP Publicity Secretary, Eric Ikwuagwu, issued a press release on Tuesday stating that no Nigerian legislation now in effect forbids citizens—including past governors—from conducting private meetings or voicing their political opinions.

“Dr. Ikpeazu has every right, both constitutionally and morally, to assemble with his supporters and discuss political matters, especially in his own residence.

“What Otti’s government has maliciously labeled as ‘unlawful political campaigning’ is nothing more than opposition political engagement, where notes are compared and policies of government scrutinised, which is the bedrock of any democracy.”

The PDP lamented the selective response of the Abia State administration to political demonstrations in the state, pointing out that the governor had attended town hall meetings, civic receptions, and Thanksgiving celebrations.

The opposition party declared that it would never be coerced or intimidated into silence, even if it claimed that former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu was not making incendiary remarks.

The Abia PDP also claimed that the treatment of former President Goodluck Jonathan by his successor after he left office was comparable to what Okezie Ikpeazu is currently experiencing in Abia.
