AFCON: Ivory Coast sack coach Jean-Louis Gasset

Ivory Coast, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosts, has fired head coach Jean-Louis Gasset.

The nation’s football association announced in a statement on Wednesday that Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant’s contracts had been “terminated” “due to insufficient results.”

Two days after their 4-0 AFCON loss to Equatorial Guinea, Gasset was fired.

The outcome was the most crushing home loss in Ivory Coast history.

Since they did so in 1984, the Elephants are the first AFCON hosts to drop two group matches.

Ivory Coast, one of the top third-placed teams, still has a slim chance of making it to the round of 16.

Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s coaches, will be their temporary leader.
