According to Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, President Bola Tinubu is turning towards fascism reminiscent of Gen Sani Abacha’s era.
This statement was released on Wednesday by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Justice Faloye.
Afenifere also disclosed intentions to form a political party to contest the incumbent administration in the general election of 2027.
Faloye charged that President Tinubu’s administration, which took office on May 29, 2023, had been a massive failure and had been bullying opponents.
He stated that Afenifere is worried about the path the administration is taking, pointing out that hundreds of people are imprisoned for taking part in hunger protests in addition to the NLC President who is being harassed.
The group claims that under the current regime, the economy has entirely collapsed, with vocal dissidents being arrested and detained.
“We have criminalization of protest under Tinubu, where peaceful protesters are threatened, harassed, attacked, arrested, and detained unjustly. What do you call all these other than fascism?
“Even the international community has accused Tinubu of criminalizing peaceful protests in a democratic dispensation and condemned the trend.
“This is unacceptable. This is not democracy anymore. We are sliding into fascism.
“We have urged President Tinubu to heed the advice of Professor Wole Soyinka regarding fascism,” the group said.
