After revealing how her estranged husband reappeared with a transfer of ₦7.9 million, the precise amount she had spent over the years on their children’s education, a Nigerian woman living overseas provoked intense online reactions. Her parents were arrested as a result of the action.

For safety reasons, the woman, whose identity is being withheld, said that the man had left her and their kids for six years without providing them with any emotional or financial support.

She said that during those years, she battled to support the children and keep them in school while working several jobs and receiving no help or communication from the father.

Her story, which was posted anonymously on the social networking site Diary of a Naija Mum, claims that the ex-husband abruptly contacted her and asked for a detailed account of all the money she had spent on the kids since he left. He transferred ₦7.9 million into her Nigerian account a few days later, which matched the entire sum she had reported.

The woman claimed that instead of expressing gratitude, she went ahead and completely cut him off from any communication, stating that the money did not make up for the emotional agony, suffering, and abandonment he had endured for six years.

The man was so incensed by her choice that he filed a police case in retaliation, which led to her elderly parents being arrested in Nigeria.

The man claimed to have sent the money because he thought a reconciliation was feasible and accused the lady of financial compulsion and emotional manipulation. But according to reports, local police questioned whether it was legal to arrest her parents over a private money dispute between ex-spouses.

Since then, legal professionals and human rights advocates have spoken out, denouncing the arrest as a flagrant abuse of authority.

“The woman didn’t commit a crime by blocking her ex. The arrest of her parents is an intimidation tactic and possibly unlawful,” said barrister Afolake Ogundipe, who spoke to Legal Lens Africa.

The tale went viral on many platforms, sparking outrage from the public and reviving conversations about gender power relations, toxic co-parenting, and the abuse of police power in domestic conflicts. Thousands of people have supported the woman in her fight to free her parents by using hashtags like #FreeHerParents, #CoParentingJustice, and #SayNoToAbuseOfPower.
