A gorilla has been spotted on camera in a remote community located in Cross River State.

The rare primate was observed in a mountainous region that lies along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

This sighting follows a recent incident in Boki Local Government Area, where a group of elephants was seen roaming and reportedly destroying farmland.

Dr. Inayom Imong, a wildlife expert, confirmed on his social media page that a gorilla had been captured by forest surveillance cameras in the same border area.

He explained that Cross River gorillas are extremely elusive and rarely seen in person. Their presence is typically confirmed through the sleeping nests they build nightly and through footage collected from motion-activated cameras.

According to Imong, this species is the most critically endangered among the four gorilla sub-species. It is classified as Critically Endangered and can only be found in a small, mountainous part of the Cross River region.

He warned that the survival of these animals is threatened by deforestation, the breaking up of their forest habitat, and occasional poaching.

Due to these threats, he added, the total number of Cross River gorillas remaining in the wild is estimated to be under 300.
