Alumi donates $71.5M to University of Delaware

The University of Delaware (UD) has announced a historic $71.5 million commitment from alumni Robert L. Siegfried, Jr. (’81) and Kathleen Marie (Horgan) Siegfried (’85), along with the Siegfried Group. This philanthropic contribution, the largest from an individual or family in the university’s 282-year history, will support the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics.

The generous gift will facilitate the creation of Siegfried Hall, a state-of-the-art facility featuring modern classrooms, research and teaching labs, a café, and an auditorium. The hall’s design will prioritise community building, incorporating a Student Success and Excellence Centre, immersive learning spaces, and interactive student meeting areas.

Siegfried Hall will also host the new Siegfried Institute for Leadership and Free Enterprise, an “idea lab” focused on developing effective leadership while exploring the principles of limited government, rule of law, and free enterprise.

The university will commission the design process for Siegfried Hall this spring, with a goal to break ground within the next four years. The Siegfrieds, longtime UD supporters, have previously donated over $6 million to Lerner College’s Horn Entrepreneurship program and the Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship

Siegfried expressed his enthusiasm for giving back to the university, stating, “To be able to share our success with the business students of tomorrow is an incredible honour. Kathy and I, and our firm, are thrilled to invest in the world-class students, faculty, staff, and campus of Lerner College and the University of Delaware.
