Joseph Tater, a U.S. citizen who is set to stand trial in Russia next week, has been forcibly transferred to a psychiatric hospital. Russian state media reported that this move came after a court approved a request from medical professionals.

The 46-year-old was arrested in Moscow in August 2024, accused of assaulting a police officer following an altercation with hotel staff. If convicted, Tater faces up to five years in prison.

On March 15, a medical commission from Moscow’s Alexeyeva psychiatric hospital conducted evaluations and determined that Tater exhibited signs of “tension, impulsiveness, and delusional ideas,” including a sense of “persecution” and a “lack of critical attitude toward his condition.”

Following this assessment, a Moscow court granted the request from the psychiatric hospital for Tater to be involuntarily hospitalized due to mental health concerns.

Tater’s trial is scheduled to begin on April 14. Reports suggest that his case could be dismissed if the Meshchansky District Court accepts the psychiatric diagnosis, potentially leading to court-ordered treatment rather than a trial.
