Anambra 2025: Why Monarchs withdraw chieftaincy titles on Ifeanyi Ubah

Three traditional rulers in Anambra State granted Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of the Anambra South senatorial zone chieftaincy titles, but these have now been revoked.

Ubah and Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, have been embroiled in a protracted legal struggle since the former wants to unseat the latter.

Ubah is regarded as the All Progressives Congress’ joker for removing Soludo, having joined the party late last year.

Meanwhile, many traditional rulers in the state bestowed several titles on Ubah during the holiday, who is known for being a highly powerful politician with widespread acceptance.

They are Igwe Gerald Obunadike Mbamalu of Ojoto in Idemili South Local Government Area, Igwe Onwuamaeze Damian Ezeani of Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area, and Igwe F.E. Ebelendu of Aguluezechukwu in Aguata Local Government Area.

The monarchs gave the senator the titles of Odenjiinji Neni (Warrior of Neni Community), Dike Eji Eje Ogu (warrior that can be taken to battle), and Ikemba Ojoto (strength of Photo community).

In the meantime, the traditional rulers who bestowed the titles have seen their wings clipped by the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who many have believed is uneasy about Ubah’s increasing power.

By the traditional rulers’ council law, Soludo began by suspending the offending traditional rulers, alleging their disregard for due procedure when granting titles.

However, the concerned traditional rulers apologised to the governor on Tuesday night and withdrew their titles.

In a press release by the Press Secretary to the state governor, Mr Christian Aburime, he said: “The monarchs have respectively apologized to Anambra State Government and withdrawn and cancelled the phantom chieftaincy titles conferred on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, as it contravenes the State Traditional Rulers’ law.”

The release further read: “This action by the three traditional rulers was in direct contravention of the State Traditional Rulers’ code, which outlines the rules and regulations regarding the granting and revocation of chieftaincy titles.

“Consequently, the titles of Ikemba Ojoto, Odenjiinji Neni and Dike Eji Eje Ogu earlier bestowed on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah have been withdrawn and cancelled by the three Igwes.

“This was contained in their respective letters of apology to the State Government which also confirmed the withdrawal and cancellation of the Chieftaincy titles which they variously described as nullity.”

The letters by the monarchs were also sighted by this reporter, where they withdrew the titles earlier conferred on Ubah.
