Following the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, in police custody on Monday, tensions in Kano State’s Rano Local Government Area escalated. Violent protests followed, and the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters was set on fire.
According to reports, Abdullahi passed away while being questioned after being taken into custody for allegedly breaking a traffic law. The young man died after being subjected to severe beaten by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who was named as Baba Ali, according to witnesses and locals.
A resident of the town said, “He was not a criminal. He was picked up for a traffic matter. People are angry because he died while in the custody of those meant to protect him.”
When word of his passing circulated quickly, young people marched to the police station to demand answers. When authorities allegedly opened fire to disperse the gathering, what had started out as a peaceful march swiftly turned violent. According to reports, two young people were shot and are presently being treated at a nearby hospital.
The irate mob retaliated by throwing stones at the cops and finally overwhelming them, causing the police building to burn down. Sources claim that the DPO suffered severe injuries during the altercation.
According to an eyewitness, “We saw them dragging the DPO away after he was injured. Things had already gotten out of control at that point.”
SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, verified the event and disclosed that an investigation has been launched into it.
