The Sarasota Orchestra has announced a transformative $60 million gift from an anonymous donor to support the planning and construction of a new music centre. This generous donation is one of the largest financial gifts ever given to an American orchestra, according to the Sarasota Herald Tribune.
The new music centre will feature a state-of-the-art 1,700-seat concert hall, a 700-seat recital hall, rehearsal rooms, offices, and dedicated space for the orchestra’s educational programs. The donor’s initial $10 million commitment helped secure the land for the centre, which is estimated to cost between $375 million and $425 million.
Scheduled to open for the 2029-30 season, the music centre will provide much-needed capacity for the orchestra and other regional performing arts organisations. It will also significantly expand the orchestra’s educational impact, offering more space and opportunities for youth orchestra programs to grow.
In a statement, the anonymous donor expressed their vision for the music centre: “I am thrilled to envision the incredible talent that will grace our community, both as members of the orchestra and as guest artists on that stage.
The donor emphasised their desire to establish Sarasota as a premier destination for world-class music performances. “When [music director] Giancarlo Guerrero receives calls from his acclaimed colleagues from around the world about where to perform top musical pieces, I want the answer to be Sarasota. I want artists to discover an iconic performance space and a home here.”Here’s the rewritten and edited news report:
