As the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal gets underway in Benin City, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Edo State branch, or PDP, has voiced optimism for victory.

According to ZINGTIE, the PDP and the All Progressives Congress, or APC, are engaged in a court dispute regarding the results of the state’s September 21 gubernatorial election.

While there have been conflicting responses to the case around the state, PDP supporters are generally optimistic.

The PDP’s Edo State chairman claims that the APC and INEC conspired to rig the election, and PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo is contesting the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC.

Alleged anomalies were emphasised in the appeal, including inflated APC votes in strongholds, significant non-compliance with the Electoral Act, and the purported illegal cancellation of PDP votes in some key local government areas.

PDP spokesperson Tony Ehilebo voiced confidence in the party’s cause before to Monday’s inaugural sitting of the tribunal.

“We have presented overwhelming evidence to prove that the election was rigged. We are confident the tribunal will restore the mandate stolen from the people of Edo and reaffirm the integrity of our democracy,” he said.

The PDP claims that the case serves as a litmus test for Nigeria’s legal system and its capacity to protect democracy.

However, the APC rejected the PDP’s assertions as unfounded. Speaking in Benin City on Monday, APC chieftain Chief Alex Okosun called the court case “sacrilegious.”

“Politicians must stop litigating every election. Asue is Senator Monday Okpebholo’s Esan brother.

“He should let bygones be bygones and join the governor to move Edo forward. We have finally gotten an Esan governor; that is the main thing,” the party chieftain stated, adding that the APC is still confident in the validity of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s mandate.
