To settle outstanding arrears owed to academic and non-academic workers, the federal government has paid N2.31 billion to federal universities.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said in a statement released Thursday by Kamorudeen Yusuf, the President’s Personal Assistant on Special Duties, that the funds were handled by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and that universities would start receiving payments right away.

He emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dedication to long-term, transparent changes that ensure the financial sustainability and well-being of employees.

He claims that the transfer of pension remittances to Nigerian University Pension Management and third-party deductions is also being finalized by Tinubu’s administration.

In order to guarantee timely and consistent payments, the government declared that Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) will be completely incorporated into university salaries by 2026. Additionally, funding for the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities initiative has been maintained.

In order to preserve stability in the education sector, Alausa emphasized that agreements will stay within reasonable financial bounds and confirmed that all interactions with ASUU and other unions are being carried out in good faith.

The action comes after ASUU decided to halt its two-week warning strike following a resumption of negotiations with the federal government.
