Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has attributed the emergence and growth of Boko Haram to the actions or inaction of Nigeria’s presidents who took office after Olusegun Obasanjo.
Atiku, who was vice president under Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007, made this assertion in a video posted on his official Facebook page during a meeting with political stakeholders from Kogi East Senatorial District.
“You remember when the Boko Haram started in Yobe? It was actually in 2002,” he said.
“The president sent for me.”
He recounted that he and President Obasanjo met with the Service Chiefs and issued them a strict timeline to address the threat.
According to him, the extremist group was quickly dismantled within weeks, and there were no further incidents until after their administration ended.
Atiku criticized the administrations that followed, alleging they failed to take the necessary steps to prevent Boko Haram from resurging and escalating into a major national security crisis.
“They’re killing your citizens and you don’t give a damn.
“That is the greatest irresponsibility by any political leader, anywhere,” he said.
