Atiku breaks silence on PDP defections, Buhari visit

In response to frequent questions from Nigerians about recent political changes, especially the defection of multiple PDP members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has provided an update.

Atiku underlined the significance of basic democratic rights in his remarks.

“Freedom of association and expression are not optional in a democracy; they are fundamental rights.”

He also emphasized that a successful democracy is built on fundamental rights, the rule of law, legitimate elections, and accountability. “Undermine any of these, and democracy itself begins to crumble,” he cautioned.

Atiku defended the meeting, saying there was no hidden agenda, in response to criticism of his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He remarked, “Buhari is not only a former leader but a significant statesman in the Nigerian political landscape. During the 2013 opposition merger, the leaders of the time consulted widely — including visits to Obasanjo and Babangida. So why is it now sacrilegious for me and other leaders to visit Buhari in Kaduna?”

Atiku also criticized what he sees as hypocrisy in the political language regarding alliances and visits, pointing out its inconsistencies.

“When PDP leaders are busy sipping tea and brokering power deals with President Tinubu, it’s called strategic alliance. But the moment I greet Peter Obi, El-Rufa’i, or visit Buhari, it becomes a national emergency,” he stated.

The former presidential candidate then shifted his attention to the current political environment, stressing that the Nigerian people and the “abysmal failure” of the Tinubu administration are at odds, not political parties.

Criticizing the way the government was managing the economy, he said “The economy is in freefall, Inflation is choking the masses. Jobs are vanishing. Youth restiveness is surging to terrifying levels.”

To solve these urgent problems, the former vice president urged national unity.

Atiku called on Nigerians to oppose divisive strategies meant to divert attention from the nation’s actual problems.

“We must reject every attempt to distract us with ethnic, regional, or religious sentiments. These are tools of manipulation, designed to divide and conquer, used by those with nothing else to offer,” he said.
