Al Nassr striker Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed the view that only players who have won the Champions League should be considered for the Ballon d’Or award.
Ronaldo made these remarks ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League final clash against Spain on Sunday, where he will face Barcelona’s young talent, Lamine Yamal.
Yamal, who has already secured the LaLiga and Copa del Rey titles, is seen as a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or. However, Barcelona fell short in the Champions League, being knocked out in the semi-finals by Inter Milan, who eventually finished as runners-up.
“In my opinion, whoever wins it should be on a team that has won trophies.
“The Ballon d’Or winner should be in a team that has won the Champions League,” Ronaldo said.
Last Saturday, Ousmane Dembele was part of the Paris Saint-Germain side that dominated Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final, boosting calls for the French winger to win the prestigious award.
Meanwhile, Yamal scored twice in Barcelona’s thrilling 5-4 victory over Germany during the Nations League semi-final earlier this week.
Many supporters and analysts believe the 17-year-old could become the youngest ever recipient of the Ballon d’Or.
