In a heartwarming display of corporate social responsibility, Nigerian banks have donated over N500m in cash and relief materials to victims of the recent floods in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. “We are here today with a firm commitment to supporting the affected communities,” said Oliver Alawuba, Group Managing Director of United Bank for Africa Plc and Chairman of the Body of Bank CEOs. “Our presence here underscores our collective commitment to alleviating the suffering of those affected by the devastating floods in Mokwa, Niger State.”

The relief materials, valued at millions of Naira, include bags of rice, beverages, vegetable oil, and mattresses. The donation reflects the banks’ collective belief that the stability of financial systems is deeply intertwined with the well-being of communities across the country.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State expressed gratitude for the timely and compassionate intervention, noting that the flood had displaced families, destroyed livelihoods, and cut off communities. “This kind of corporate response from the banking sector is not only timely but exemplary,” he said.

The governor called for collaborative planning between the public and private sectors to address climate change mitigation and water infrastructure development. He also urged the banks to extend their support to strategic initiatives such as irrigation projects and food export schemes.

The event concluded with a renewed pledge by the banks to maintain a long-term partnership with Niger State in its recovery and development efforts
