Benue Assembly holds public hearing on anti-corruption bill

The Benue State House of Assembly on Tuesday conducted a public hearing on House Bill 60, a legislative proposal aimed at creating the Benue Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission. The commission is intended to address citizens’ complaints and take action against corrupt activities.

The session, held at the Assembly Complex in Makurdi, was led by Deputy Speaker Chief Lami Danladi Ogenyi, who stood in for Speaker Rt. Hon. Alfred Emberga. Ogenyi formally opened the hearing and delivered the main address.

During her remarks, Ogenyi reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to fighting corruption and enhancing transparency. She praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for forwarding the bill to the House on February 26, noting it reflects a productive relationship between the legislative and executive branches.

“Corruption weakens governance and denies the common man the benefit of development,” she said, stressing the need for strong institutional measures to curb the menace.

She noted that the envisioned commission would act as an independent platform where citizens could lodge complaints about injustice, with the assurance that violators would be held accountable a step she said would foster greater public confidence in governance.

The hearing was attended by traditional rulers, civil society organizations, youth groups, and other relevant stakeholders from various parts of the state. These participants submitted written contributions and suggestions on how the proposed commission should function effectively.
