Benue community where it is forbidden to spend more than N100,000 on traditional marriage

HRM Prof. James Iorzua Ortese Ayatse and Ijir Tamen have spoken out against the practice of supplying itemised lists for traditional marriage ceremonies in Tiv country in an effort to preserve Tiv customs.

This custom, which involves giving potential grooms long lists of things they must have, has been formally discontinued by the Tiv Traditional Area Council.

Ijir Tamen outlined the updated prerequisites for a traditional marriage, emphasising the new protocol’s simplicity:

Financial Contribution: As a symbolic gesture, prospective grooms are now obliged to provide N100,000. This is the maximum amount that can be contributed; depending on the situation, it may be reduced.
Elders’ Presence: Grooms are welcome to come to the marriage ceremony with three or more well-known elders from their community.

Talk with the Bride’s Parents: In order to formally announce his wish to marry, the groom must go to the bride’s parents. After that, the parents would speak with their daughter face-to-face to get her permission. The groom offers his bride the N100,000 agreed upon cash contribution and takes her home if she accepts.

Location of Celebration: The bride’s family home will no longer host the customary marriage celebrations. Rather, the bridegroom will host the celebrations in his house.
