Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has advocated for the creation of state police nationwide, asserting that localized policing is a long-term solution to the ongoing security challenges facing Benue and other parts of the country.
The Governor made this call on Wednesday during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the state, following the tragic killing of over 200 individuals in an attack allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The President’s visit to Makurdi was part of a broader initiative to express sympathy and solidarity with the people of Benue State in the wake of the recent violence.
Alia said in his call said, “Let me also reiterate my firm support for the establishment of state police as a sustainable solution to the persistent insecurity in our state and perhaps elsewhere.
“Why acknowledge other concerns surrounding its implementation. I believe the federal government can address these by setting clear state specific guidelines and regulatory frameworks to prevent any potential.”
