Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has revealed that former President Muhammadu Buhari died of pneumonia, not cancer.

Mrs Buhari revealed this when remembering her husband’s last days on Earth.

Buhari died at London Clinic in mid-2025 and was taken back to Nigeria to be buried in his birthplace of Daura, Katsina State.

The former First Lady described Buhari’s final day as tough for the ex-President.

This information was found within Buhari’s biography titled: “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari,” authored by Charles Omole.

She said, “The final days were difficult. ICU for some days, then the ward, then the slide.

“The last three days were the worst.”

Aisha Buhari attributed her late husband’s sickness to decades of physical exposure during his tenure in the military.

The book quoted her as saying: “He had been a soldier in the bush for 30 months, mostly in the South-South, soaked by rain in uniforms that dried on his body.

“Decades later, she believes, the cold had lodged in his lungs and bones — exacerbated by office air-conditioning. Pneumonia was the last adversary.”

According to the book, Buhari’s sputum tests revealed no evidence of malignancy.

“It was pneumonia, they said, but at his age, pneumonia can be sovereign,” the book quoted.
