Civil society organisations loyal to the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) have stormed the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to demand the inclusion of the party’s candidates in the next nationwide bye-elections.

Numerous demonstrators holding placards and banners with the following inscriptions: “INEC, who is using you against LP,” “Mahmood stop destroying democracy in Nigeria,”

“Tell INEC to obey court orders,” among others, assembled for the nonviolent protest as early as 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday,

However, the Labour Party is not in charge of planning the planned protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters, according to a statement signed by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman. The statement also called the organizers “impostors” and “political impersonators.”
