Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman has announced $19.8 million in grants to combat the state’s opioid and drug epidemic. The Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission awarded funds to 75 organisations focused on treatment, recovery, and prevention.
The grants will support various initiatives, including Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, which received $397,539 for coordinated reentry and recovery programmes for justice-involved individuals with opioid-related substance use disorder. Hazard Community & Technical College will receive $500,000 for a standalone field classroom unit at recovery and correctional centres, offering industry-recognised certificates in high-demand fields. Unlawful Narcotics Investigations, Treatment & Education (Operation UNITE) was awarded $859,000 for student-led opioid use prevention strategies and leadership development opportunities
“It’s an incredible honour to be part of building programs that will help Kentuckians toward long-term recovery,” said Coleman. “Our commonwealth is leading the nation in the fight against addiction, and I look forward to the lifesaving work of the organisations we’re investing in today.” The grants are part of the commonwealth’s share of the over $900 million in settlements with corporations found liable for the opioid crisis.
