US President Donald Trump has ended trade talks with Canada, citing the country’s digital services tax on American tech firms as a “blatant attack” on the US. Trump announced that new tariffs on Canadian goods would be revealed within a week, potentially upending months of diplomatic progress between the two nations.
“We haven’t really had a lot of luck with Canada,” Trump said, adding that Canada might face tariffs rather than negotiations. This move comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada “will not accept a bad deal” and rush into an agreement.
The digital services tax, which imposes a 3% levy on revenues generated by US tech giants like Amazon, Meta, Google, and Apple, has been a major point of contention. The tax applies to revenue above $20 million and is retroactive to 2022.
In response, Canada has agreed to rescind the digital services tax to advance broader trade negotiations with the US. Prime Minister Carney emphasised that Canada’s new government will prioritise the best interests of Canadian workers and businesses in these negotiations.
