BREAKING: UNIABUJA appoints Veterinarian as new acting VC

The Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, has announced the appointment of Prof. Matthew Adamu as Acting Vice-Chancellor in an acting capacity for a period of three months, effective August 11, 2025. According to the university’s Acting Director of Press, Dr Habib Yakoob, Adamu succeeds Prof. Patricia Manko Lar, who completed her six-month tenure as Acting Vice-Chancellor.

During her stewardship, Prof. Lar provided “purposeful leadership, fostered academic and administrative stability,” and initiated the selection process for a substantive vice-chancellor, according to the acting registrar, Roseline Adakayi. The university community expressed “sincere gratitude to Professor Lar for her dedicated service, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence and institutional progress.”

Adamu, a veterinary scholar, brings extensive experience to his new role. With 27 years of experience as a registered veterinarian, he has developed a rich career spanning teaching, research, extension services, and supervision. He was promoted to full professorship in 2019, specialising in veterinary parasitology and entomology (helminthology).

As Acting Vice-Chancellor, Adamu is tasked with supporting the Governing Council, led by Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, to conclude the ongoing process for appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor. The Acting Registrar wished him a successful tenure as he “steers the university forward during this transition period”.
