BREAKING: Union threatens industrial action against Turkish Airlines over alleged victimization

The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has issued a warning to the management of Turkish Airlines, threatening industrial action over allegations of victimization against employees for choosing their preferred union.

This has reignited the ongoing dispute between the workers and the airline’s management. In his address at the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration, Comrade Ben Nnabue, President of NUATE, accused the General Manager of Turkish Airlines in Nigeria of actively preventing workers from joining the union and blocking the establishment of a union office, in violation of Nigerian Labour Law.

Nnabue expressed frustration over the unsuccessful efforts by former Ministers of Aviation and Aerospace Development, as well as Labour and Productivity, to mediate the dispute. He highlighted that Turkish Airlines had failed to comply with the labour laws in Nigeria.

The NUATE President also reminded members that the National Industrial Court had dismissed a legal case brought by Turkish Airlines against the union, citing a lack of merit. He encouraged union members to prepare for industrial action against the airline following the May Day celebrations.

He said: “The case of victimisation of the staff of Turkish Airlines by the General Manager of the Airline for membership of, and holding office in, our union contrary to the provisions of law has now reached a point beyond elastic limit.

“Mediation efforts by the Minister of Aviation and Minister of Labour and Productivity have been rendered ineffective by the intransigence of Turkish Airlines Management.

“As such, the Union has no choice than to do what we have to do, especially as the case of the Airline against the Union at the National Industrial Court has been thrown out.

“Accordingly, the Lagos and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) State Councils are to be battle ready for war with Turkish Airlines immediately after the May Day celebration.”

Besides, Nnabue lamented the continuous deductions of 50 per cent of total Internally Revenue Generation (IGR) of aviation agencies at source by the Federal Government.
