To enhance traffic flow and lessen congestion on major roadways, David Umahi, the MMinister of Works, has ordered the removal of speed bumps from the nation’s highways.
This was disclosed by Umahi during a two-day retreat held in Abuja on Friday for the Federal Ministry of Works’ highway engineers and managerial staff.
The ministry organised the retreat, which had as its theme “Ensuring Delivery of Mr President’s Agenda on Road Infrastructural Development.”
The minister claimed that because some speed bumps were installed carelessly, resulting in accidents and lengthening travel times, the order to remove them was required.
“I came through one of the federal routes and for a journey that is supposed to last like one hour within that stretch, it lasted like three hours because every 20 metres you will see a bump.
“Although there is nothing wrong with speed bumps in certain designated locations. But there is an approved technical design for bumps.
“There are also allowable locations for bumps and that is what we want to do. So the National Assembly has directed that these speed bumps should be dismantled.”
According to Umahi, the ministry had observed that certain speed bumps were dangerous and were responsible for numerous collisions and fatalities.
“Some speed bumps are high, touching the bottom plates of vehicles; that is not desirable. It defeats the aim.
“So, this is what we are saying; and that is what the national assembly is saying, the ministry as well as motorists want them to dismantle it.”
Umahi stated that after achieving technical compliance, applications will be sent to the minister and controllers for the areas via the Permanent Secretary for permission before any speed bumps could be built.
He went on to say that there needs to be a warning for drivers to exercise caution and a safe side distance of at least 100 meters.
Regarding infrastructure development, Umahi stated that President Bola Tinubu’s extensive infrastructure development was intended to provide the economy the much-needed boost it needed and to enhance the quality of life for the populace.
As a result, he stated that the retreat’s goal was to help attendees fully comprehend the president’s renewed hope program, with particular reference to the construction of road infrastructure.
Bello Goronyo, the Minister of State for Works, praised the president’s infrastructure development strategy, claiming that it was making Nigerians happy.
“Let me urge you to use the knowledge that you will acquire today in ensuring that you come up to speed with the modern technologies and innovation so that our country will be better in terms of roads, infrastructure.
“Without the road infrastructure, there cannot be economic growth, and there cannot be prosperity,” he said.
According to Olufunso Adebiyi, the ministry’s permanent secretary, the Federal Road Safety Corps’ records showed that, among other things, reckless driving, drunk driving, disobedience of traffic laws, and illegal crossings of the road were responsible for accidents.
“It may surprise you that the percentage of accidents caused by bad roads were less than 10 per cent.
“The bad roads are traceable to inefficiency on the part of the engineers, poor supervision of our road works among others.”
Noting that the ministry was dedicated to enhancing their ability to carry out the administration’s goal, Adebiyi asked the engineers to take charge and stop some of the anomalies.
The heads of the Senate and House Works Committees reaffirmed their dedication to helping the ministry fulfil its role.
