Through a voluntary repatriation program run by the Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM) in Libya’s Southern Region, with assistance from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) of the United Nations, Libya has repatriated 166 Nigerian migrants.

The goal of the exercise, which was conducted at Sabha International Airport, was to assist stranded Nigerians in safely returning to their homeland.

The migrants were flown back to Nigeria from the city of Sabha in southern Libya, according to the news that was posted on Migrant Rescue Watch’s X account on Wednesday.

A recent occurrence that brought attention to the predicament of Nigerian migrants in Libya prompted this repatriation effort.

Omowunmi, a young Nigerian woman from Ondo State who is said to be in her early 20s, uploaded a disturbing video on social media in which she appealed for urgent help.

After her guardian allegedly left her in Libya, Omowunmi talked about her battle with a severe ulcer and homelessness in the video.

“I am very sick and I need to come back to Nigeria. I need help from Nigerians. Please have mercy on me,” Omowunmi pleaded, stating that insufficient nutrition and medical care had made her condition worse.

The challenges experienced by numerous migrants who flee Nigeria for North Africa in quest of better prospects only to find themselves stranded in dangerous circumstances have been brought to light by Omowunmi’s appeal.

She asserted that her guardian had taken away her SIM card, which prevented her from communicating with her relatives, and that she had been denied money despite her numerous attempts to get it back.

Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the spokesperson for the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), suggested that Omowunmi seek urgent support from the Nigerian embassy in Libya.
