After 16 years of business, Huw Rees Brides in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, is closing its doors due to owner Huw Rees’ kidney failure. However, Mr. Rees has chosen to close the boutique on a “positive note” by donating almost 100 bespoke gowns to charity.
“I wanted to close the business on a positive note, and what better way to do that than by giving back to charity?” Mr. Rees said. The donated dresses have been given to various organisations, including Cancer Research, the British Red Cross, local colleges, and a local dog charity.
Mr. Rees, also known as Huw “Fash,” is a familiar face on S4C programs Prynhawn Da and Heno. He has been open about his kidney disease and dialysis treatment. “People have been disappointed; we’re a multi-award-winning brand and just won a national wedding award recently,” Mr. Rees said. “But customers who know why have been so supportive.”
The donations have been ongoing, with around 20 dresses going to Cancer Research and 40 gowns to Bridgend and Carmarthen College to focus on sustainability. The British Red Cross in Llandeilo received around 30 wedding dresses, including bridesmaids’ dresses, veils, and accessories
Sarah Morris, British Red Cross shop manager, expressed her gratitude for the donation. “The shop has been buzzing with excitement. The phone has been ringing with enquiries about the dresses, and customers have been visiting us to try the dresses on,” Ms. Morris said. “The money raised by selling these dresses will support our work across the UK and around the world, allowing us to continue to be there for people in crisis. We’re truly grateful to Huw for this donation.”
The donated collections include bespoke designs by Mr. Rees, as well as gowns from designers like Ellis Bridal, Lou Lou, and Louise Bentley, typically priced over £1,000. However, the designer dresses have been sold for between £50 to £100, said Mr. Rees.
Mr. Rees emphasised that he is not trying to be seen as extremely kind but is simply doing what he can. “I’m doing what I can, and it’s time now to think clearly about where these dresses are going to go,” he said. “We’ve had 16 successful years, and I’m just grateful for the supportive brides.”
The boutique will continue to work with existing brides until their last wedding in November. Mr. Rees is now training to be a celebrant and hopes to marry brides instead of working on dresses
